BAHAMAS
WINS THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH WORLD CUP GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP.
Thomas
John Bethel of Nassau, Bahamas won the 6 th Annual
Duke of Edinburgh world Cup Golf Championship held in England
at the famous Berkshire and Wentworth Country clubs on October
4 and 5 th, 2006. This was the First time the Bahamas has won
this prestigious world cup trophy. The two day event involved
countries from all over the world that participated by holding
their own tournaments to select the individuals who would proceed
to the championship round in England.
Thomas Bethel and Mr. William Saunders
represented the team sponsored by Majestic Tours Company
from Nassau, Bahamas that won the qualifying tournament held
at the Ocean Club Golf course on Paradise Island in September.
The World Cup Trophy was presented to Thomas Bethel
by Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex at a dinner
celebration held at Windsor Castle in Windsor, England. Commented
Eddie Wheeler, member of the organizing committee
for the Duke of Edinburgh Cup “ The Bahamas should be
extremely proud of Thomas Bethel’s championship
golf victory and his maturity in delivering a remarkable acceptance
speech in front of the Royal Family at Windsor Castle.”
Thomas Bethel, an international business student
in his senior year at Lynn University in Florida is the current
Bahamas amateur Golf Champion and plays on the varsity golf
team at Lynn University.
Thomas Bethel commented “ This trip was
an honor to represent the Bahamas and winning the World Cup
for my country and receiving the award from the Prince of England
is something I will treasure and remember forever.”

2006
NATIONAL AMATEUR CHAMPION – from
the second day onward to the 18th hole of the last round, there
was a fierce display of talent and equally as fierce was the
HUNGER between the two players as to who would walk away as
‘THE’ Champion. And then, it was a DOUBLE BOGEY
for one and a PAR PUTT for the other that made the decision
– THOMAS BETHEL (pictured left) became
the 2006 National Champion yet OREN
BUTLER from his command lead from the second day made
it known that it could have ended either way. Now, HURRAY goes
out to Thomas Bethel and HATS OFF to Oren Butler
– both CHAMPIONS in their own rights!!!
